The National Corvette Museum is proud to showcase one of the most authentic and highly awarded 1961 Corvettes in existence—a stunning Honduras Maroon example that looks just as it did the day it left the assembly line.
The 1961 model year marked a turning point for Corvette design. It was the final year before the second-generation Sting Ray would make its debut, and Chevrolet engineers began laying the groundwork for that transition through a fresh approach to styling and function. Gone were the chrome “teeth” of the front grille, replaced by a refined mesh insert that gave the car a cleaner, more modern appearance. The headlight bezels, once chrome, were now painted to match the body—a subtle but impactful design choice.
Perhaps the most striking update was found at the rear. For the first time, Corvette introduced a “boattail” rear deck with a tapering center line, a design cue that would become a signature of the C2 generation just two years later. While Corvette had always pushed boundaries in performance, 1961 also brought added comfort and convenience. Drivers and passengers benefited from new features such as windshield washers, interior courtesy lighting, and padded sun visors—luxuries that would become standard in years to come.
The example now on display at the Museum is a time capsule of this pivotal year. Finished in its original Honduras Maroon exterior with a Fawn Beige interior, this Corvette retains its factory-issued 283 cubic-inch V8 engine and transmission. Every detail, from the stitching on the seats to the sheen of the body-colored headlight trim, speaks to a dedication to authenticity.
That commitment has not gone unnoticed. This Corvette is one of only four ever recognized with both the Duntov Mark of Excellence Award and the 5 Star Bowtie Award by the National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS). These prestigious honors are reserved for Corvettes that meet the highest standards of originality, judged through rigorous inspection and documentation.
