First 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Rolls off the Line

Regular production of the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray coupe begins February 3, 2020 at General Motors Bowling Green Assembly in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Initial vehicle shipments to dealers are expected to begin in late February or early March.

2020 Corvette VIN 0001 Auctions for $3 Million

The history-making VIN #0001 of the first mid-engine Corvette – a black-on-black 3LT with the Z51 performance package – crossed the block at the 49^th Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction just weeks before the Corvette begins shipping to Chevrolet dealers.

“Reaction to the mid-engine Corvette has been extraordinary,” said Mary Barra, GM Chairman and CEO, who was on-hand at the auction. “It’s both humbling and exciting to harness that success and provide the proceeds to the Detroit Children’s Fund.”

The Detroit Children’s Fund, a nonprofit focused on high-potential investments to provide Detroit school children the opportunity to receive an excellent education, will be able to invest an additional $3 million in their mission thanks to the auction of the first 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.

Proceeds from the auction will fund comprehensive school interventions that result in academic success for kids. These interventions help great schools grow, under-performing schools improve and new schools thrive. And because great schools require strong leadership and well-trained teachers, DCF will also use the funds to recruit, develop and retain leadership and teacher talent.

The winning bid was placed by Rick Hendrick, founder and CEO of Hendrick Companies.

“I am the number one Corvette junkie in the world,” said Hendrick. “Thanks to Chevrolet and Barrett-Jackson, because they always pick charities that are so good and help so many people.”

Corvette coupe production will begin at GM’s Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Kentucky in early February, with customer deliveries slated to begin before the end of February. Hendrick will take delivery of VIN 0001 and 0002 at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY.

Raised on a farm in the 1950’s, Rick Hendrick raced and wrenched on cars at an early age. His love for automobiles led him to open a small used car lot with another car dealer at the age of 23. Hard work and his devotion to the automotive world led to the purchase of a dealership of his own that became the precursor to the Hendrick Automotive Group which now consists of more than 120 franchises over 13 states, employing over 10,000 people.

In 1984, Hendrick Motorsports was founded and has grown into a facility that spreads out over 430,000 sq. ft., employing 600 people to support four full time Chevrolet teams in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. With a NASCAR record of 14 national series owner’s championships and 15 overall, its roster of stock-car drivers includes Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Today he owns a large collection of Corvettes that includes many of the first and lasts in models and generations. His most recent addition being the VIN 1 Z06 Stingray Corvette that he paid $1 million for at auction in support of the Karmanos Cancer Institute.

Having accomplished so much, Rick is grateful and humbled to be inducted into the Corvette Hall of Fame.

My love for Corvettes goes back to when I was a teenager, and it was the love for the car that got me into racing and the automobile business. To be honored at a place where so many of the Corvette greats are honored — it’s just humbling. I never dreamed that I’d be recognized in such a way.”
