A familiar face from General Motors is re-emerging from retirement to join the team at the National Corvette Museum. Tom Peters, former Director of Design for the GM Performance Car Studio and 2019 Corvette Hall of Fame inductee, has joined the Museum’s curatorial team effective January 2021 as Consulting Curator of Exhibits. Tom is no stranger when it comes to assisting with Museum exhibits, having co-curated ‘Car-toon Creatures, Kustom Kars and Corvettes: The Art and Influence of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth’, a special exhibit that officially opened in January, 2020 and continues through April, 2021.

“Sean had the thought to see if Tom would be interested in being involved with the Museum in a more official capacity after his co-curation of the Rat Fink exhibit,” shared Derek E. Moore, Director of Collections / Curator at the Museum. “Of course, his design background with GM is huge and we figured the best use of his talents would be in aiding us in the overall visual experience of our exhibits at the Museum.”

The Museum’s collections team, including Derek and Associate Curator Bob Bubnis, collaborate to develop a narrative plan and storyline for each exhibit, with plans to bring Tom into the fold to dig even deeper into the stories and the look of the exhibit.

“We want Tom to help build up our exhibits, tapping into his first-hand experience behind GM’s closed doors,” said Derek. “Tom can take those stories that are text on a label and help us bring them alive visually. We will look at how we can use the cars and artifacts we have to make our exhibits as much of a visual experience as they are educational – balancing the storyline with something visually interesting for our guests.”

With over 18 months of leadership at the National Corvette Museum under his belt, Dr. Sean Preston, President and CEO, is excited to continue investing in exhibits and Corvette history.

“We have Corvette Racing’s Andy Pilgrim as our resident track pro at the NCM Motorsports Park, and now Tom Peters as a resident design pro at the National Corvette Museum. We are not only preserving and showcasing Corvette history, now we have a direct connection to that history – someone who was not only there to experience it, but who made that history during his career. This is truly a historic hire for the National Corvette Museum. We care deeply for the cars and artifacts in our care, but we also curate Corvette culture. Tom has a wealth of experience and understanding in both areas. He will be a welcomed addition to the already successful Curatorial and Collections team.”

“I think the Museum has a great relationship with GM but bringing Tom on board just makes those connections even stronger,” added Derek. “I’m excited to tap into his nearly 40 years of experience with the iconic automaker.”

Even General Motors is excited about the move and looking forward to how Tom’s skills can be further utilized to preserve, educate and promote the iconic Corvette.

Tom Peters, pictured with General Motors President Mark Reuss, celebrate Peters’ induction into the Corvette Hall Fame in 2019.

“I can’t think of a better choice for this position than Tom Peters,” said Mark Reuss, General Motors president. “His institutional knowledge of Corvette and his enthusiasm for it are unmatched. Through the years, he has played a crucial role in maintaining Corvette’s status as America’s Sports Car, and, as Consulting Curator of Exhibits, he will ensure the National Corvette Museum remains the ultimate caretaker of Corvette’s storied history and its dynamic future.”

Tom is looking forward to playing a role in the Museum’s exhibits moving forward, with a combination of remote work and regularly planned stints physically working in the Museum.

“The invitation to work with the National Corvette Museum, the first thing that struck me is that it’s a fabulous honor,” shared Tom. “I’ve always felt that working with the Corvette team was not only a dream and a privilege, but an incredible adventure and I’ve always regarded Chevrolet and Corvette as family. This is an extension and continuation of that. Working with Chevrolet and the Corvette team becomes more than just a job, it’s part of your life and lifestyle.”

First up for Tom will be helping to refine the new Enthusiast exhibit area, and Damsels of Design exhibit – which was fully funded by Elfi’s Silver Pearl Sisterhood, a female-led philanthropic giving society of the Museum.

“We are excited that Tom was open to this opportunity. It’s really going to bring the Museum to another level with the visual design of our exhibits,” added Derek.

“To me, the possibilities are wide open,” said Tom. “From the viewpoint of a customer coming in, or an enthusiast, you want them to feel like they’re part of the team so they experience the excitement whether it’s design, engineering, racing or even how you market cars. We have the opportunity to help guests fully understand the rich heritage behind what has inspired Corvette over the years in terms of vision, design and development… the way they have evolved and influenced culture around the world.”

The new Enthusiast area will be funded through the generous support of contributors to the Museum’s 2020 fall giving campaign. If you’ve not yet made your end-of-year tax-deductible donations and would like to support this new exhibit, click here to make an online gift. Donations may also be mailed to the Museum at 350 Corvette Drive, Bowling Green, KY 42101.

“Thank you to all of our amazing members and supporters,” said Sean. “Without you, we would not be able to grow and continue enhancing this Gateway to All Things Corvette. We can’t wait to show you all the new exhibits.”

The National Corvette Museum, located at exit 28 in Bowling Green, is offering a special $5 admission rate for residents of the Barren River Area Development District (BRADD) through the month of December.

“As tourism season winds down for the year we wanted to offer our local friends an affordable option to get out of the house and enjoy what we consider a national treasure,” shared Dr. Sean Preston, President and CEO. “The Museum features 115,000 square feet under roof, so there’s plenty of space to socially distance indoors while enjoying America’s Sports Car.”

The Museum features a number of new exhibits, including ‘The Vision Realized: The Journey to the Mid-Engine Corvette’; ‘Cartoon Creatures, Kustom Kars and Corvettes: The Art & Influence of Ed Big Daddy Roth’ and the ‘E. Pierce Marshall Memorial Performance Gallery’. Exhibits are updated on a regular basis, so no two visits are the same. A racing simulator is available for an additional fee. Guests can also witness customers picking up their brand-new Corvettes through the Museum Delivery program.

For families with children participating in NTI (non-traditional instruction) or virtual learning, free public Wi-Fi is available.

BRADD includes Allen, Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Hart, Logan, Metcalfe, Monroe, Simpson and Warren counties and visitors can show their drivers’ license to receive the discounted rate. The Museum is open daily, 8am-5pm CT, and is closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

For David Duggar, his love of Corvette started at an early age when he was gifted a toy model.

“The connection started when I was really young, probably around six or seven, my aunt bought me a model car,” said David. “It was already put together, a metal car. It was a ’54 Corvette, and it was white. I fell in love with them back then.”

Whenever David would see a ’54 Corvette it would remind him of his aunt.

“I really enjoyed my aunt very much and it was very special to me, remembering her. That’s one of the things with this car, the first thing that came to mind when I saw it.”

David shared that he had always wanted a Corvette.

“I ran across this one when we were in San Francisco, California on vacation and had to have it. My wife said, ‘go ahead if that’s what you want.’ We purchased it then in the early 2000s and had it brought back from California to Knoxville, Tennessee. I’ve owned it ever since.”

Since owning the Corvette, David has not only appreciated the car, but shared it with others so they could, too.

“We’ve enjoyed it. It’s been at the house and then we had it in storage at Reeder Chevrolet in Knoxville, TN. They’ve had it in their showroom so that other people could look at it and enjoy it.”

David has been a customer of Reeder Chevrolet for more than 10 years, previously purchasing vehicles for the business he used to own, and that relationship is what would eventually plant the seed for him to donate his Corvette to the National Corvette Museum.

“I deal a lot with Corvettes and I sell a lot of Corvettes,” shared Rick Boggs at Reeder Chevrolet “The East Tennessee Corvette Club meets here at Reeder Chevrolet, so I’m familiar with the Museum and what they do. And I know people donate cars to the Museum, so I suggested it might be something he might want to do.”

That suggestion would eventually lead to David’s September 2020 donation of his 1954 Corvette.

“I’d been to the Corvette Museum once before and really didn’t think about it until one of the gentlemen at Reeder talked about donating it. And I thought that was a really great idea for other people to look at it and enjoy it. Maybe it will bring back some of their memories.”

Thank you to David Duggar for his generosity, and to Rick Boggs at Reeder Chevrolet for helping promote the Museum and our cause!

The National Corvette Museum earned top honors in the 2020 USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice travel award contest for Best Attraction for Car Lovers.

Twenty automotive attractions were nominated by a panel of relevant experts which includes a combination of editors from USA TODAY; editors from 10Best.com; relevant expert contributors; and sources for both these media and other Gannett properties. The public was invited to vote daily over a four-week period for their favorite. The Museum earned the most votes and subsequently was named the Best Attraction for Car Lovers for 2020.

While much of the country spent the bulk of the 2020 spring travel season sheltered at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, staff at the National Corvette Museum used that time to find new ways to engage their audience through digital content, as well as undertake a major overhaul of multiple galleries within the exhibit space of the Museum.

From March 19 through May 8 the Museum debuted 32 episodes of a new ‘Vettecademy’ video series geared towards school-age kids, offering at-home educational and entertaining episodes on various aspects of Corvette. The series was so popular that a ‘Fully Vetted’ series was also launched, offering viewers of any age an in-depth look at various stories behind America’s iconic sports car. Vettecademy as well as all eleven episodes of Fully Vetted are available for viewing on the Museum’s website.

In addition to sharing virtual video content, the Museum also hosted a virtual online car show, with over 1,000 entries, and a virtual Michelin NCM Bash event bringing together live seminar speakers, produced content and live Museum walk-throughs all via Zoom. The event welcomed over 500 live online viewers.

Upon reopening to the public on June 8, visitors were greeted with a new ‘look’ of two galleries within the Museum including a heavily remodeled and digitally enhanced E. Pierce Marshall Memorial Performance Gallery, featuring 180-degree video projection; interactive touch screen kiosks with additional photo, text and video content; integrated artifact displays; and a shiny display floor full of iconic Corvette race cars.

“Thanks to the generosity of E. Pierce Marshall Jr. we were able to completely overhaul the former performance and racing exhibit space into a state-of-the-art gallery that truly showcases important examples of high-achieving track Corvettes,” shared Museum President and CEO Dr. Sean Preston. “Pierce shared a love of Corvette with his father and continues his enthusiasm as an avid Corvette Racing fan and track competitor himself. His C7.R is an exciting centerpiece to this brand-new gallery.”

Continuing the renovations and upgrades, the Museum also gutted the design and engineering area to create a new exhibit in collaboration with General Motors on the history of the development of the mid-engine Corvette. The “Vision Realized” exhibit features iconic prototypes and experimental vehicles including CERV-I, Astro II, XP-895 Reynolds-Aluminum Corvette, XP-819 ‘Ugly Duckling’ rear-engine, XP-987 GT two-rotor Wankel engine, and the Indy Corvette along with artifacts and a comprehensive storyline of how Corvette’s first Chief Engineer, Zora Arkus-Duntov, dreamed of one day offering a mid-engine Corvette as a production vehicle.

“The next generation Corvette has drawn the attention of not only die-hard Corvette enthusiasts, but also fans of other marques. This highly anticipated car and exhibit is something any performance car enthusiast is going to want to immerse themselves in,” shared Sean. “What’s even better is that visitors can observe as new owners take delivery of their 2020 Corvettes right here inside the Museum. It doesn’t get any more exciting than that!”

During the pandemic the Museum also debuted a new exhibit display for the 1954 ‘Entombed’ Corvette which was made possible through a donation by Robin and Mary Vann of East Tennessee. The Corvette Cave-In: Skydome Sinkhole Experience also received an upgrade to the digital technology that powers the sinkhole collapse animation, showcasing the eight Corvettes who fell victim. Finally, visitors to the Museum will browse a special exhibit: “Cartoon Creatures, Kustom Kars and Corvettes: The Art and Influence of Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth” featuring candy-colored fiberglass marvels of the late 50s to mid-60s as well as the subsequent vehicles they would influence, including two Corvettes used in the Transformer films.

“Our goals during the pandemic were to keep as many team members employed as possible and use the time to upgrade our visitors’ experience – taking the Museum to another level,” added Sean. “Our team worked hard to update the facility so that it reflects the look and feel of the next generation Corvette. We are excited for guests to see it for themselves.”

The Museum is open daily, 8am-5pm CT and is located in Bowling Green, Kentucky at I-65, exit 28.

On Tuesday, June 30 the National Corvette Museum received a donation of a 1988 Corvette, a car the donor had owned for about ten years. But it wasn’t until he inquired about donating it to the Museum that the history of the car started to come to light.

Lars Wallace Jr. hands over the keys to his dad, Lars Wallace’s Corvette to Museum Director of Collections / Curator Derek Moore.

“My dad purchased the car about 10 years ago at a car dealership in lower Michigan and enjoyed it,” shared son, Lars Wallace Jr. “The car had 200,000 miles on it at the time. We enjoyed it for about five years, and he picked up a couple more Corvettes that he’d rotate through. Now he’s getting up there in age a little bit and we thought we’d thin out the herd.”

The Wallace family had visited the Museum several times and were aware that the Museum regularly received vehicle donations. “Dad said he was thinking about donating the car, so I talked to him about it. We brought the title by the Museum in February to get it researched and to see if the Museum would be interested in the car. They looked it up and found out it was a Miss America pageant car.”

In pulling the build sheet on Lars Wallace’s Corvette, a Chevrolet Motor Division internal memo was attached with the subject ‘1988 Miss America Corvette Convertibles’ dated August 7, 1987. On the memo, five order numbers and VINs were listed with the cars to be shipped to Chevrolet Central Office – Show & Display for upcoming auto shows in 1988. Included on the list was Lars’ VIN.

“I was the first Miss America to enjoy a whirlwind of a year with one of our national sponsors, Chevrolet Motor Division,” shared Miss America 1988 Kaye Lani Rafko Wilson. “I recall during the week of competition a gentleman from Chevrolet came into the rehearsal hall and mentioned to all of us how excited they were to be a part of the Miss America organization and that the newly crowned Miss America, which would be crowned that Saturday, would go home with her very own 1988 red convertible Corvette.”

Kaye Lani was the first Miss America to receive a Corvette through the competition, and to this day still owns her 1988 Bright Red Convertible. She is the only Miss America of the six winners to receive a Corvette to still own hers. The last Miss America to receive a Corvette was 1993 titleholder and tv personality Leanza Cornett. That Corvette was previously part of Corvette Hall of Fame inductee Bob McDorman’s collection and sold at a Mecum Auction in 2010.

Miss America 1988 Kaye Lani Rafko Wilson Zoom calls in during the donation ceremony while Kentucky’s Miss America 2000 Heather French Henry speaks on behalf of the Miss America organization during the ceremony.

“GM/Chevrolet became a sponsor in 1988, so various Miss Americas would get a Corvette after they were crowned,” shared Heather Renee French Henry, Kentucky’s only Miss America and titleholder for 2000, who was present at the donation ceremony. “Corvette was present at a lot of appearances throughout the year and of course, Corvettes, even still today, are present at the famous ‘Show Us Your Shoes’ parade at the Atlantic City Boardwalk.”

“My sisters and I are deeply appreciative of the many sponsors that have been able to help us through the years, but Chevrolet was one of my most favorite,” added Kaye Lani. “I still have my Corvette and absolutely love it.”

The 1988 Miss America Corvette donated by Lars Wallace, is Dark Blue Metallic and has nearly 225,000 miles on it.

“I think it’s just amazing that a car like this, with a non-rebuilt engine, can have over 220,000 miles on it. It illustrates the reliability and durability of GM cars,” shared Lars Jr. “Every Corvette is special. It just turns out that this one is a little more special than the common one. We hope that we have an exhibit here in the future focusing on the Miss America cars.”

Thank you to Lars Wallace, and Lars Wallace Jr. for their generosity and help in preserving the history of Corvette!

The National Corvette Museum was recently certified as a Sensory Inclusive venue through KultureCity. The new initiative promotes an accommodating and positive experience for all guests with a sensory issue that visit the Museum or NCM Motorsports Park.

Over 80% of the Museum’s staff participated in the online training led by a KultureCity certified trainer on how to recognize guests with sensory needs and how to handle a sensory overload situation. Sensory bags, equipped with noise canceling headphones, fidget tools, verbal cue cards and weighted lap pads are available to guests who may feel overwhelmed by the environment and can be obtained at the admissions counter.

“Sensory sensitivities, or challenges with sensory regulation, are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and other sensory regulation challenges,” shared Deb Howard, Museum Education Coordinator. “One of the major barriers for these individuals is sensitivity to over stimulation and noise, which is a part of the environment at our venues. With the new certification and sensory tools, the Museum is better prepared to assist guests with sensory sensitivities in having the most comfortable and accommodating experience possible.”

Participation and certification by KultureCity was made possible by Julie Harris Hinson, a founding member of Elfi’s Silver Pearl Sisterhood, in honor of JW Hardin.

Prior to visiting, families can download the free KultureCity App to view what sensory features are available and where they can access them. In addition to dozens of other sensory inclusive locations from around the country, the NCM will soon be added to the KultureCity App.

KultureCity is a leading non-profit recognized nationwide for using its resources to revolutionize and create change in the community for those with sensory needs. Since the program’s inception, KultureCity has created over 350 sensory-inclusive venues in four countries.

While an official reopen date for Kentucky’s museums and other tourist attractions has yet to be announced by Governor Beshear, fans of the Chevrolet Corvette have a new way to connect with the National Corvette Museum and experience a taste of the improvements that have been in the works for the past six months.

“We kicked off renovations last November, and have been hard at work on the new E. Pierce Marshall Memorial Performance Gallery ever since,” shared Museum Director of Collections / Curator Derek E. Moore. “For those who have visited us in the past, we think they’ll be impressed with the upgrades we’ve been able to make to the space. And for those who have yet to visit, they’ll be equally impressed by technology as advanced as the car it celebrates.”

Only 100 enthusiasts will be allowed to tune in for a first look at the new exhibits. A private live stream will showcase the artifacts, technology, cars and even the people behind them.

Corvette Hall of Fame inductee Gib Hufstader, who was a member of Zora Arkus-Duntov’s inner circle of engineers, will share his insight into the Corvette SS and how that car, perhaps more than any other, embodied the spirit of racing that Zora desperately wanted to have.

Hall of Fame inductee John Heinricy will also participate in the virtual event as he was heavily involved with the 1989 Corvette ZR-1 “Record Run” car that’s featured in the gallery – a display that pays homage to the team that set 12 international world time / distance speed records in a ZR-1 and L98 Corvette, averaging as high as 175.885 mph over a 24-hour period.

The program will include a special appearance by former Corvette Racing driver and Hall of Fame inductee Andy Pilgrim before Racing Program Manager Doug Fehan joins in to share a few stories that only Doug can properly tell.

Viewers will have the rare opportunity to hear a few of the cars crank up, with a peek under the hood, followed by a Q&A session.

As a bonus, Derek will venture into the Design and Engineering Gallery for another sneak peek – this time to show viewers the progress being made on ‘The Vision Realized: 60 Years of Mid-Engine Corvette Design.’

“General Motors approached us about an exhibit they were developing, which focuses on the key vehicles that built the foundation for the 2020 Corvette Stingray,” shared Derek. “It features original renderings from our Museum alongside photographs, artifacts and ephemera from both the GM Design Archive & Special Collections, and GM Heritage Center. We are excited to be the first location to display the exhibit.”

Wrapping up the unique opportunity is a look at the new ‘Entombed Corvette’ display, showcasing the iconic 1954 Corvette that had been ‘cemented in history’ for 27 years, an exhibit made possible through the generosity of Robin and Mary Vann of the East TN Corvette Club.

“We are appreciative of Pierce Marshall, Jr., the Vanns and so many others for their financial support which helped us make these amazing improvements to the Museum,” said Dr. Sean Preston, President and CEO of the National Corvette Museum. “This year we celebrate the Museum’s 26th Anniversary, and many of these galleries have not changed since the opening of the Museum in 1994. We’re excited to share a peek at the renovations with our supporters, and look forward to announcing our grand reopening soon.”

The virtual, interactive experience is Thursday, May 7 at 11 am CT. Access to this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is available for a $100 tax deductible donation to the Museum. Registration is available at https://www.corvettemuseum.org/event/e-pierce-marshall-memorial-performance-gallery-virtual-sneak-peek.
