BOWLING GREEN, KY (October 14, 2025) – The National Corvette Museum announced today a major expansion to protect and grow its renowned Corvette collection. The new 66,000-square-foot Collections facility, set to open in Fall 2026, will serve as the future home for some of the world’s most important historic Corvettes, Corvette artifacts, and Corvette preservation efforts.

Located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on the National Corvette Museum Campus, the new Collections facility will significantly increase the Museum’s capacity for vehicle preservation, small artifact conservation, and long-term storage, while also supporting public education and guest engagement. Once complete, the building will offer behind-the-scenes tours for visitors looking to explore Corvette’s past in new ways, offering unprecedented public access to the Museum’s collection.

Why We’re Expanding: Honoring Historic Vehicles Like Neil Armstrong’s Corvette

A key reason behind the National Corvette Museum’s expansion is the strategic growth of its vehicle collection, which requires the highest standards of preservation. One example is the recently donated 1967 Corvette Sting Ray once owned by astronaut Neil Armstrong.

Years before he walked on the Moon, Armstrong was commuting to NASA in a Marina Blue coupe powered by a 427-cubic-inch, 390-horsepower V8, highlighting one of the many ways that America’s Sports Car has a direct connection to one of the most extraordinary chapters in American history.

“This vehicle is a prime example of the need for a new facility,” said Robert Maxhimer, Director of Curatorial Affairs and Education at the National Corvette Museum. “When a Corvette with a story like Neil Armstrong’s comes through our doors, it deserves to be cared for in a space that is built to honor its legacy. This expansion ensures we can physically preserve the vehicle while protecting its history for future generations to enjoy and learn from.”

The facility is being built to support the growth of the collection for decades to come, allowing the Museum to accept additional rare vehicles and historically significant materials that tell the full story of Corvette design, innovation, racing, and culture. It will also provide the Museum with additional exhibition space, enhancing storytelling and offering the behind-the-scenes experiences that Members and guests value.

The Future of Corvette Preservation Begins Now

As part of the drive to build the new collections facility, the National Corvette Museum has secured $2.1 million in funding commitments to the capital campaign supporting this project.

Longtime supporters of the National Corvette Museum, Mary and Ivan Schrodt, have generously pledged $1,000,000. In recognition of their gift, the Vehicle Collections Gallery will be named in their honor. Michael LaRocca, National Corvette Museum Board Chair-Elect, has pledged $500,000 to name the Atrium Lobby the Michael LaRocca and Family Atrium, where all guided tours of the facility will begin. Melanie and Tim McMichael & Family, known philanthropists and longtime supporters of the Museum, have pledged $500,000 to name the McMichael Family Preservation Center, as well as the Glenn and Andrea Johnson Heritage Conservation Lab.

This contribution builds on their previous investment in 2021 that supported the McMichael Family Education Center. An additional $100,000 gift has also been secured from an anonymous donor.

You can help protect the history of America’s Sports Car. Contributions to the new Collections facility will directly support the long-term care of historic Corvettes, rare artifacts, and the future growth of the Museum’s collection. To donate, visit www.corvettemuseum.org/expansion, or if you would like to discuss additional partnership opportunities, contact the Museum’s development team at development@corvettemuseum.org.

A Campus-Wide Vision: Connecting Corvette History, Assembly, Manufacturing, and Ownership

The new Collections facility strengthens the National Corvette Museum’s campus-wide approach to celebrating America’s Sports Car. The Bowling Green Assembly Plant, where every Corvette has been built since 1981, is located just across the street. The NCM Motorsports Park, where guests can experience Corvette performance firsthand, is also part of the Museum campus and sits directly across Interstate 65. Construction of the new Collections facility will also bring NCM Insurance one step closer to returning to the Museum campus. Once complete, this addition will allow visitors to engage with the full arc of Corvette ownership, history, and performance in a single location.

“This expansion project is about creating a sustainable future for preserving the full story of Corvette,” said Bryce Burklow, President and CEO of the National Corvette Museum. “We’re safeguarding the design breakthroughs, engineering milestones, and cultural moments that make Corvette an icon. And soon, our guests will be able to experience that process in a whole new way.”

About the National Corvette Museum

The National Corvette Museum, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit foundation, is where Adrenaline Meets Tradition®. As an educational and research institution, the Museum’s mission is to educate worldwide audiences on the evolution of the Corvette—America’s Sports Car—through the collection, preservation, and celebration of its legacy. Located just one mile from the General Motors Bowling Green Assembly Plant, which has produced every Corvette since 1981, the Museum campus features 115,000 square feet of exhibit and event space, a collection of more than 100 historically significant Corvettes, 50,000 Corvette artifacts, and the NCM Motorsports Park.
Some of the artifacts in the National Corvette Museum’s collection are actually small collections themselves. One notable example is a set of medallions celebrating the Corvette’s 40th anniversary, which was donated to the Museum by George Biederman. Produced by Pacific Mint in 1993, the set includes a total of 60 medallions, each one showing an image of a Corvette and the crossed flags emblem that corresponds to the Corvette’s generation. The medallions are 1.25 inches tall, two inches wide, and .125 inches thick. They are made of sterling silver, although a coating of translucent enamel covers the top of each one. This coating gives the medallions the appearance of large, brightly colored postage stamps.

Collectors could order the medallions by mail on a month-to-month basis. The set is divided into three cases, each holding 20 medallions. To get the total number to 60, Pacific Mint released two medallions for several Corvette model years, often to represent the coupe and convertible body styles in the set. Other medallions feature special edition or landmark Corvettes like the 25th Anniversary Edition from 1978 and the 1990 ZR-1. The final medallion in the set depicts the 40th Anniversary Corvette, released in 1993.

The National Corvette Museum’s automobile collection includes several of the cars featured in the Pacific Mint set, including a 25th Anniversary Edition Corvette donated by Craig and Sharon Conde. This car’s most distinguishing attribute is its two-toned silver paint, which consists of bright silver on the upper surface and dark silver on the lower surface, separated by silver pinstriping. Although the car also came with aluminum wheels and sport mirrors, the silver paint was what ultimately set this Corvette apart from others in 1978. A total of 15,283 25th Anniversary Corvettes were sold, and their production began the custom of General Motors periodically releasing special Corvettes for the car’s milestone anniversaries. As the Corvette turns 72 this month, enthusiasts have no shortage of collectibles celebrating the evolution of America’s Sports Car.

It’s a multi-stage process that begins with conditioning the items—ensuring their physical preservation—and then documenting each piece for future reference.
From internal GM memos to plant culture snapshots, the O’Keefe collection adds vital texture to our understanding of the Corvette legacy. It offers an insider’s view of not just vehicle development but also the people, processes, and passion that shaped Bowling Green’s Corvette story.

He was ultimately selected as one of NASA’s second group of astronauts, who would fly in the Gemini and Apollo programs. Although Lovell didn’t make his first spaceflight until December 1965, as a pilot aboard Gemini 7, he experienced the astronaut lifestyle much sooner. Launched in December 1968, Apollo 8 became the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon. On Lovell’s final spaceflight, Apollo 13, he and his crew had to abort a planned lunar landing after an oxygen tank exploded.

When Gordon Killebrew joined the Corvette Hall of Fame in 2007, he had a well-earned reputation as the guru of C4 Corvettes. Originally a mechanic at the GM plant in Bowling Green, he became a central figure in the operations of the Corvette Action Center, an advisory phone line for Corvette technicians, dealers, and owners. Killebrew offered instructions to customers for troubleshooting their cars and compiled feedback on improving the Corvette. Armed with expertise in the C4’s design, Killebrew edited service manuals, owner’s manuals, and technical bulletins before their final release. He even started a training school, educating Corvette owners on the technology and operations of their cars.

For fans of the C4 era, Killebrew was known as both a mechanical wizard and a purveyor of Corvette culture. He and his wife Chris, a fellow Corvette aficionado, were popular in the Corvette community and honorary members of many clubs. It is therefore no surprise that Gordon and Chris filled up a whole photo album with pictures of one such meetup. The album, donated recently to the National Corvette Museum by Gordon, features pages of color photographs of Corvettes surrounding the Killebrew home in Tennessee. The vast majority are C4s, glistening in the sunlight and stretching nearly everywhere the eye can see. Additional photographs show the Killebrews and their friends caravaning north on Interstate 65 to visit the NCM. While not all the photos have dates, several in the album are marked as from 1994, meaning that they were taken just after the NCM opened.

Although production of the C4 Corvettes ended after 1996, many Corvette enthusiasts were still interested in learning from Killebrew. He continued his training school and pivoted toward hosting more seminars and special workshops, often in conjunction with the Bloomington Gold Show. More recently, Killebrew has been building birdhouses, gifting over 10,000 of them, all custom-painted, to people in his local community. His work with the C4 remains an important part of Corvette’s technological history, capturing a moment in time like a picture in an album.

For 70 years, Corvette has represented speed, style, and personal expression. It’s no surprise that when you add in a little holiday flair, Corvettes become a natural inspiration for Christmas decorations. This month, we share four Corvette-themed Christmas tree ornaments from the George Biederman Collection.

In the first example, Santa Claus has traded in his sleigh for a 1953 Corvette, complete with gifts in the passenger seat and a big green bow around the middle. This ornament was created by the ENESCO Corporation in honor of Corvette’s 40th anniversary in 1993. Named “Dream Wheels” by ENESCO, it was part of a larger series of holiday ornaments based on reverent, nostalgic, and even humorous themes. Although there are plenty of ornaments featuring Santa at the wheel of a Corvette, this version was sold for one year only.

During Corvette’s 50th anniversary in 2003, another iconic design inspired this ornament by Hallmark. Buyers could adorn their Christmas trees with the 1963 Sting Ray split-window coupe. Based on a sculpture by artist Don Palmiter, this ornament captures the ’63 Sting Ray’s sleek and smooth styling. Finished in Sebring Silver, the decoration is similar to the real-life example on display at the National Corvette Museum. Note the wrapped presents visible through the split window.

A second ornament by Hallmark honors a toy that has appeared under many Christmas trees. Released in 2008, the ornament celebrates Barbie’s 1976 Star ‘Vette, the first Corvette toy created for Mattel’s famous fashion doll. The original Star ‘Vette was a deep pink C3 that came with a set of star decals. The ornament features all the details of the toy including the luggage rack, “Super Slicks” tires, and Barbie herself in the driver’s seat. This tribute to the Star ‘Vette shows how timeless both Barbie and the Corvette have become.

One final ornament from Hallmark is from 1997, modeling the then-new C5 Corvette. For this design, again created by Don Palmiter, the focus is on realism. The ornament depicts a stylish Torch Red Corvette just as it would have appeared on the showroom floor. Like Palmiter’s ’63 Sting Ray ornament, this Corvette also holds wrapped presents visible through the back window, adding some holiday spirit to America’s Sports Car.

On August 6, the stars of the NTT IndyCar Series will take to the streets of Nashville in the third annual Music City Grand Prix. In honor of this exciting event, the National Corvette Museum is proud to share several special artifacts from its collections. These objects recall some of our favorite motorsports memories, highlight Corvette’s connections to open-wheel racing, and celebrate the history and heritage of Nashville.

Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicle (CERV) I Replica: By the late 1950s, the American automobile manufacturers had withdrawn their direct support of auto racing. However, the withdrawal did not quell Zora Arkus-Duntov’s enthusiasm for high-performance cars. Zora led a team of fellow Chevrolet engineers to create a mid-engine, tube frame, single-seat concept car built to open-wheel racing specifications. Revealed to the public in November 1960 at the US Grand Prix at Riverside, Zora and his team were careful to describe their creation as a “research vehicle” built for testing purposes. In reality, the racing spirit was still alive and well at Chevrolet.

While Zora wanted to apply lessons learned from CERV I to Corvette’s development, the vehicle also served as a window into the future of American open-wheel racing. Mid-engine cars were beginning to dominate Formula One by 1960, and they would take over racing at Indianapolis within the next decade. By placing the heavy engine between the cockpit and the rear axle, mid-engine cars had superior handling and better grip than their front-engine counterparts. Zora’s CERV I never did compete in a race, but it did launch a series of other CERVs that Chevrolet would use for extensive performance testing. The replica on display, loaned from Tony Briski, is a faithful recreation of the original.

Gibson Les Paul Custom Corvette Prototype Guitar: Nashville’s nickname says it all – “Music City.” The capital city of Tennessee holds a deep connection to the iconic sounds, names, and brands of American music, including Gibson guitars. Gibson’s Les Paul guitars are made exclusively in Nashville and are renowned as instruments of the highest quality. Likewise, Corvette is an American original known for its own fine craftsmanship. So, it is little surprise that Gibson has produced a line of Les Paul Custom Corvette-themed guitars.

This prototype guitar, on display at the NCM, features styling details borrowed from the 1960 Corvette. The body is tuxedo black with an ivory scoop similar to the iconic “scoop” design on the side of the car. Other references to the 1960 Corvette include “fuel injection” and “283” (the size of the Corvette’s engine in cubic inches) engraved into the pickup covers. The “Corvette” name appears in silver script along the neck of the guitar with the Corvette flags emblem on the head. This guitar is also signed by Zora Arkus-Duntov, adding an additional flourish to this tribute to two iconic American brands.

1967 Dick Guldstrand/Bob Bondurant Le Mans Corvette 1:18 Scale Model: This model Corvette, donated by Leslie Gardner, is autographed by Corvette Hall of Fame member Dick Guldstrand. While planning a career in aerospace engineering, Guldstrand caught the racing bug not long after purchasing his 1956 Corvette. Embracing his inner need for speed, Guldstrand dabbled in open-wheel competition but had a much stronger career racing Corvettes. He became one of the most celebrated drivers of his era in the west coast road racing scene, winning three consecutive SCCA Pacific Coast Championships from 1963-1965. Guldstrand’s successes on the track, bolstered by his engineering expertise, opened doors for him to compete on some of racing’s biggest stages. One of those was the 1966 24 Hours of Daytona, where he scored a class victory in a Corvette Sting Ray owned by Roger Penske.

In 1967, Guldstrand got to team up with Bob Bondurant (another Corvette Hall of Famer) to race a Corvette L88 in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Upon arriving at Orly Airport near Paris, the team found that they had forgotten to secure a trailer for the car. So, Guldstrand and Bondurant drove their Corvette from the airport to Le Mans, roughly 200 kilometers across the French countryside. The thundering roar of the engine attracted the attention of the locals along the way and an excited crowd followed Guldstrand and Bondurant to Le Mans, eager to see the Corvette in action.

Unfortunately, the Corvette did not finish the race. The L88 dropped out with an engine failure while leading its class in the 13th hour, though not before setting a new GT record of 171.5 mph on the Mulsanne Straight. Despite the disappointing result, Guldstrand would recall his Le Mans experience fondly, especially the enthusiastic reception for his boisterous, earth-shaking Corvette.

Indianapolis 500 Commemorative Corvette Belt Buckles: Corvettes have served as the official pace cars of the Indianapolis 500 for 20 races, including the last seven. For several of the early years, Indianapolis Motor Speedway created a unique tribute to America’s Sports Car in the form of commemorative belt buckles. The NCM collection includes three buckles donated by Vince Perriello, one each from 1986, 1995, and 1998. Only 500 of these buckles were produced each year.

Although the design of each buckle is unique, they share some common elements. Corvette’s status as the official pace car of the Indy 500 appears prominently on the front side of all three buckles. Each one also features the Corvette emblem used in their respective years. The belt buckles from 1986 and 1995 include the C4 style emblem with the checkered flag and Chevrolet banners over a thin circle. This was updated to the C5 emblem in 1998 with the return of the stylized crossed flags. On the reverse side, all three buckles include an official serial number out of 500. As Corvettes have continued to pace the field at the Brickyard into the 21st century, you might say that Corvettes perfectly fit the Indianapolis 500 like a buckle on a belt.

1978 Chevrolet Corvette Silver Anniversary Edition: The first time a Corvette ever served as an Indy 500 pace car was in 1978. Coincidentally, 1978 was also Corvette’s 25th anniversary. To celebrate the occasion, General Motors created a Silver Anniversary Edition of the Corvette. This car was the first Corvette since 1961 to come with two-toned paint. The upper surface of the body is a vibrant silver, while the lower surface is a much darker metallic gray. Other features include exterior “sport” mirrors and aluminum wheels. GM did not set a limit on the Silver Anniversary Corvette and the car was in high demand, with over 15,000 produced. One of these milestone cars, donated by Craig and Sharon Conde, is on display at the NCM.

The Silver Anniversary Edition Corvette’s two-toned design would inspire its pace car counterpart. This time, the color pattern was flipped with dark gray, nearly black paint on top and bright silver on the bottom. Fans’ anticipation to see a Corvette at the Brickyard was so great that GM eventually decided to produce about 6,000 Limited Edition Pace Car Replicas. On race day, 1960 Indianapolis 500 winner Jim Rathmann paced the field in the black and silver Corvette, kicking off a beautiful relationship between the Greatest Spectacle in Racing and America’s Sports Car.
