MotorWeek Drivers’ Choice Awards evaluators expressed that this iteration of Stingray, 66 years in the making, has been well worth the wait. Described as precise, confident, and incredibly responsive, with driver-centric cockpit and ergonomics, they said the Corvette Stingray breaks all the rules written by its predecessors. This eighth-generation design is the first production Corvette with the engine mounted behind the driver while producing an amazingly quiet cabin environment.

MotorWeek Creator and Host John Davis said, “Chevrolet has managed to engineer a vehicle that delivers on performance, comfort, technology, and aesthetics, the likes of which will give its global rivals more than a little heartburn, and they’ve done it all for a base price of just under $60,000.”

“Reaction to the mid-engine Corvette has been extraordinary,” said Mary Barra, GM Chairman and CEO, who was on-hand at the auction. “It’s both humbling and exciting to harness that success and provide the proceeds to the Detroit Children’s Fund.”

The Detroit Children’s Fund, a nonprofit focused on high-potential investments to provide Detroit school children the opportunity to receive an excellent education, will be able to invest an additional $3 million in their mission thanks to the auction of the first 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.

Proceeds from the auction will fund comprehensive school interventions that result in academic success for kids. These interventions help great schools grow, under-performing schools improve and new schools thrive. And because great schools require strong leadership and well-trained teachers, DCF will also use the funds to recruit, develop and retain leadership and teacher talent.

The winning bid was placed by Rick Hendrick, founder and CEO of Hendrick Companies.

“I am the number one Corvette junkie in the world,” said Hendrick. “Thanks to Chevrolet and Barrett-Jackson, because they always pick charities that are so good and help so many people.”

Corvette coupe production will begin at GM’s Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Kentucky in early February, with customer deliveries slated to begin before the end of February. Hendrick will take delivery of VIN 0001 and 0002 at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY.

With its new mid-engine configuration and sleek, modern design, the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray offers unprecedented performance at a starting price of $59,995 (including Destination Freight Charge of $1,095, excluding tax, title, license, dealer fees and optional equipment).

“Most people thought when we moved the Corvette to mid-engine it would no longer be attainable, but we knew we couldn’t mess with a winning formula and the 2020 Stingray proves it,” said Brian Sweeney, Chevrolet U.S. vice president.

The 1LT will start at $59,995, the 2LT trim package will start at $67,295 and the top-level 3LT trim package on the 2020 Corvette Stingray will start at $71,945 (including DFC, excluding tax, title, license, dealer fees and optional equipment). “We’ve packed a lot of performance into the Corvette Stingray at this price when you consider an eight-speed dual clutch transmission, Small Block V-8 and engine-mounted dry sump oil system are all standard,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette executive chief engineer.
