National Corvette Museum Opens Driven to Preserve Exhibition in Bowling Green, Kentucky

Rare Corvettes and Artifacts Highlight Preservation Work in New Exhibition

The National Corvette Museum has officially opened Driven to Preserve, a new exhibition that places the behind-the-scenes work of collection care on full display. Located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, the exhibition invites visitors to explore how the Museum protects and preserves more than 120 rare Corvettes and over 50,000 Corvette artifacts.

From documentation and cataloging to environmental monitoring and interpretive planning, Driven to Preserve reveals how preservation happens one decision at a time. Guests step into the daily routines that keep America’s Sports Car ready to teach, inspire, and endure.

What Visitors Will Experience in Driven to Preserve

This new Corvette exhibition expands the story beyond the showroom floor. Alongside historic vehicles, visitors will encounter artifacts and archival materials that highlight the human side of Corvette history, including the owners, builders, racers, and defining moments that shaped the legacy.

The exhibition explains:

What happens when a Corvette or artifact donation arrives

How objects are cleaned, documented, and prepared for long-term care

The difference between restoration and preservation

Why environmental control and documentation are critical to maintaining authenticity

“This new exhibition helps visitors see what it takes to keep Corvette history accurate, accessible, and ready to teach,” said Robert Maxhimer, Director of Curatorial Affairs and Education. “From cataloging artifacts and monitoring conditions to the hands-on care of vehicles like the 1962 Corvette rescued from the Sinkhole or engineering development cars, this exhibition shows that stewardship is active work. It is how the Museum protects America’s Sports Car and the stories that come with it for research, interpretation, and the next generation.”

Vehicles Featured in Driven to Preserve

1979 Engineering Development Corvette

Built with an experimental chassis and parts to test updates for the 1980 and 1981 model years, this unique Corvette helped validate the Bowling Green Assembly Plant production line and train new hires.

1958 Corvette Chassis

This display illustrates the structural foundation of the car and the work involved in a frame-off preservation project. Visitors can see what a Corvette looks like when the body and frame are separated.

1967 Corvette Sting Ray “Sweat Hog”

Nicknamed the “Sweat Hog,” this second-generation Corvette demonstrates how racing history becomes part of preservation. The car achieved success on New York roads and circuits, including winning the 1974 Northeast NCCC championship. Despite multiple racing incidents, it remains approximately 85 percent original.

1989 Corvette Snake Skinner II

A prototype Corvette ZR-1 developed to explore weight reduction and performance testing in response to the Dodge Viper, this vehicle was one of 84 pre-production ZR-1 models used for testing and media previews. It later recorded a quarter-mile time of 11.88 seconds.

1962 Tuxedo Black Corvette

One of eight Corvettes damaged in the Museum’s 2014 sinkhole collapse, this vehicle was recovered three weeks after the event and initially displayed in its damaged condition. Restored in 2017, preservation efforts focused on maintaining original fiberglass and straightening the frame while honoring its history.

Supporting the Future of Corvette Preservation

Driven to Preserve takes residence in the Museum’s Limited Engagement Gallery as construction continues on the new National Corvette Museum Collections Facility. The 66,000-square-foot facility is currently under construction on the Museum campus and will support long-term vehicle storage, artifact conservation, and preservation work.

Once complete, the Museum plans to offer guided tours beginning in Spring 2027, providing guests with rare access to the National Corvette Museum collection. As select vehicles move to the new facility, the Limited Engagement Gallery will continue to support staging, research access, and active collection care.

Preserving a Rare Chapter of Corvette History: The 1993 Black Rose ZR-1

Preservation work at the National Corvette Museum is about more than restoring a vehicle’s appearance. It is about honoring engineering, safeguarding authenticity, and ensuring that rare Corvettes continue to tell their stories for generations to come. One of the Museum’s current preservation projects is a 1993 Black Rose Corvette ZR-1—one of just 11 ZR-1s produced in this color for the 1993 model year. Its rarity alone makes it significant, but the care taken in its preservation is what ensures its legacy endures.

Mechanical Preservation Comes First

Before addressing cosmetics, the Museum’s team focused on critical mechanical systems to ensure the car remains safe, functional, and historically accurate. The fuel pumps, clutch assembly, and brake system have all been replaced as part of this process. These updates are essential to maintaining the integrity of the vehicle while allowing it to be properly maintained and demonstrated in the future. Mechanical preservation is a foundational step. Without it, visual restoration alone would fall short of the Museum’s standards.

Careful Body Preparation and Refinishing

With mechanical work complete, attention turned to the body. Portions of the car were disassembled to allow the team proper access for surface preparation. The finish was then hand-sanded down to primer—a labor-intensive process that ensures the surface is properly prepared and true to original specifications. The refinishing process included two coats of base color followed by two heavy coats of clear. This approach allows for depth, durability, and accuracy while respecting the original character of the Black Rose finish. The vehicle is currently in the wet sanding and buffing stage, where fine adjustments bring clarity and consistency to the final surface.

Approaching Final Assembly

Final assembly is scheduled for next week, marking the last major phase of this preservation effort. Once complete, this rare Black Rose ZR-1 will stand as a carefully preserved example of Corvette’s performance heritage from the early 1990s. Projects like this reflect the Museum’s long-term commitment to preserving America’s Sports Car—not just as an object to admire, but as a living record of design, engineering, and history. Stay tuned as this 1993 Black Rose Corvette ZR-1 returns to full form.

BOWLING GREEN, KY (October 14, 2025) – The National Corvette Museum announced today a major expansion to protect and grow its renowned Corvette collection. The new 66,000-square-foot Collections facility, set to open in Fall 2026, will serve as the future home for some of the world’s most important historic Corvettes, Corvette artifacts, and Corvette preservation efforts.

Located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on the National Corvette Museum Campus, the new Collections facility will significantly increase the Museum’s capacity for vehicle preservation, small artifact conservation, and long-term storage, while also supporting public education and guest engagement. Once complete, the building will offer behind-the-scenes tours for visitors looking to explore Corvette’s past in new ways, offering unprecedented public access to the Museum’s collection.

Why We’re Expanding: Honoring Historic Vehicles Like Neil Armstrong’s Corvette

A key reason behind the National Corvette Museum’s expansion is the strategic growth of its vehicle collection, which requires the highest standards of preservation. One example is the recently donated 1967 Corvette Sting Ray once owned by astronaut Neil Armstrong.

Years before he walked on the Moon, Armstrong was commuting to NASA in a Marina Blue coupe powered by a 427-cubic-inch, 390-horsepower V8, highlighting one of the many ways that America’s Sports Car has a direct connection to one of the most extraordinary chapters in American history.

“This vehicle is a prime example of the need for a new facility,” said Robert Maxhimer, Director of Curatorial Affairs and Education at the National Corvette Museum. “When a Corvette with a story like Neil Armstrong’s comes through our doors, it deserves to be cared for in a space that is built to honor its legacy. This expansion ensures we can physically preserve the vehicle while protecting its history for future generations to enjoy and learn from.”

The facility is being built to support the growth of the collection for decades to come, allowing the Museum to accept additional rare vehicles and historically significant materials that tell the full story of Corvette design, innovation, racing, and culture. It will also provide the Museum with additional exhibition space, enhancing storytelling and offering the behind-the-scenes experiences that Members and guests value.

The Future of Corvette Preservation Begins Now

As part of the drive to build the new collections facility, the National Corvette Museum has secured $2.1 million in funding commitments to the capital campaign supporting this project.

Longtime supporters of the National Corvette Museum, Mary and Ivan Schrodt, have generously pledged $1,000,000. In recognition of their gift, the Vehicle Collections Gallery will be named in their honor. Michael LaRocca, National Corvette Museum Board Chair-Elect, has pledged $500,000 to name the Atrium Lobby the Michael LaRocca and Family Atrium, where all guided tours of the facility will begin. Melanie and Tim McMichael & Family, known philanthropists and longtime supporters of the Museum, have pledged $500,000 to name the McMichael Family Preservation Center, as well as the Glenn and Andrea Johnson Heritage Conservation Lab.

This contribution builds on their previous investment in 2021 that supported the McMichael Family Education Center. An additional $100,000 gift has also been secured from an anonymous donor.

You can help protect the history of America’s Sports Car. Contributions to the new Collections facility will directly support the long-term care of historic Corvettes, rare artifacts, and the future growth of the Museum’s collection. To donate, visit www.corvettemuseum.org/expansion, or if you would like to discuss additional partnership opportunities, contact the Museum’s development team at development@corvettemuseum.org.

A Campus-Wide Vision: Connecting Corvette History, Assembly, Manufacturing, and Ownership

The new Collections facility strengthens the National Corvette Museum’s campus-wide approach to celebrating America’s Sports Car. The Bowling Green Assembly Plant, where every Corvette has been built since 1981, is located just across the street. The NCM Motorsports Park, where guests can experience Corvette performance firsthand, is also part of the Museum campus and sits directly across Interstate 65. Construction of the new Collections facility will also bring NCM Insurance one step closer to returning to the Museum campus. Once complete, this addition will allow visitors to engage with the full arc of Corvette ownership, history, and performance in a single location.

“This expansion project is about creating a sustainable future for preserving the full story of Corvette,” said Bryce Burklow, President and CEO of the National Corvette Museum. “We’re safeguarding the design breakthroughs, engineering milestones, and cultural moments that make Corvette an icon. And soon, our guests will be able to experience that process in a whole new way.”

About the National Corvette Museum

The National Corvette Museum, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit foundation, is where Adrenaline Meets Tradition®. As an educational and research institution, the Museum’s mission is to educate worldwide audiences on the evolution of the Corvette—America’s Sports Car—through the collection, preservation, and celebration of its legacy. Located just one mile from the General Motors Bowling Green Assembly Plant, which has produced every Corvette since 1981, the Museum campus features 115,000 square feet of exhibit and event space, a collection of more than 100 historically significant Corvettes, 50,000 Corvette artifacts, and the NCM Motorsports Park.
At the intersection of American muscle and science fiction legend, one Corvette blurs the line between road and starship. Now on display at the National Corvette Museum, the 1965 Corvette featured in the 2009 reboot of Star Trek brings cinematic flair and Corvette heritage together in a way only America’s Sports Car can.

This screen-used stunt car plays a pivotal role in the early moments of Star Trek (2009), as a young James T. Kirk sends it screaming across the Iowa countryside with a hover-bike cop in pursuit. The sequence is high-octane and pure adrenaline, ending with Kirk leaping out just before the Corvette launches into a quarry. While its fate in the film was dramatic, the actual car survives to tell its story.

As a 1965 model, this Corvette showcases mid-year updates including blacked-out horizontal grille bars, a reimagined fender design with three vertical louvers, and the introduction of four-wheel disc brakes—a performance milestone for the era. That same year also marked the return of Rochester fuel injection, making the ’65 Corvette a benchmark in Sting Ray evolution.

A deleted scene from the film expands the narrative. The Corvette once belonged to George Kirk, James’ late father. After George’s death, the car ended up with James’ uncle—until the future Starfleet captain found the keys and made the car his own, if only for one final ride.

Now, thanks to a generous loan from Ray Zielinski, this iconic Corvette is part of the Museum’s collection of historically significant vehicles. It’s a reminder that Corvette’s cultural impact doesn’t stop at racetracks or road tours. It spans generations, genres, and galaxies.

The 1965 Star Trek Corvette is a must-see for fans of performance, pop culture, and everything in between. Visit the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and stand face to face with a Corvette that boldly went where no car had gone before.

In 2002, country music star Brad Paisley bought his first Corvette, a used 1999 C5. Paisley, whose grandfather was a Pontiac salesman, came from a family of car enthusiasts. Once he had the means to buy a performance car, an automobile he could drive for fun, Paisley chose the Corvette, kickstarting his love for America’s Sports Car.

Paisley has a much larger automobile collection now, including a 1961 Roman Red Corvette currently on display at the National Corvette Museum. Corvettes from 1961 featured a restyled boattail rear fascia and, for the first time, four taillights. Paisley’s Corvette also includes white coves on both sides. The red with white coves color combination is a personal favorite of Paisley’s, who owns a Corvette-inspired tour bus decorated with the iconic red and white coves livery.

Along with the 1961 Corvette, the Museum’s display includes several other artifacts on loan from Paisley, honoring his music career and love of Corvettes. One is a Corvette-themed carbon fiber guitar, created by custom guitar designer Bill Crook in 2012. Featuring the Corvette crossed flags and a Z06 emblem, the guitar reflects the innovative use of carbon fiber in modern Corvettes. Next to the guitar is a vinyl record of Fifth Gear, Paisley’s 2007 studio album, which has five number one songs and was certified platinum in 2008. A third artifact is a poster celebrating Paisley’s 20 million worldwide sales, including gold records and images of his studio albums through 2017.

Several of Paisley’s biggest hits reference cars, driving, and the freedom of the open road. In a 2015 interview with Car and Driver, Paisley reflected on the influence of automobiles in American culture, comparing cars to clothing. In that regard, Paisley has “worn” several Corvettes. A collection that started with his 1999 C5 also includes a 2020 Long Beach Red Stingray, which he received through the R8C delivery program at the National Corvette Museum. Yet the 1961 Corvette, with its classic red paint and white coves, is the one that inspired, in Paisley’s opinion, possibly the most attractive and iconic design for any automobile.

After a meticulous, multi-year preservation effort, the only Corvette ever owned by Zora Arkus-Duntov—the legendary “Godfather of the Corvette”—will make its public debut during the National Corvette Museum’s 31st Anniversary Celebration, August 28–30, 2025.

Zora’s personal 1974 custom two-tone blue Corvette Stingray, a retirement gift from Chevrolet, has been preserved with precision by the Museum’s Collections and Preservation team. The body was carefully separated from the chassis, allowing complete access to the frame, suspension, and underbody. Each component was documented, cleaned, stabilized, and reinstalled to ensure its authenticity. Even the creased leather armrest on the driver’s side—worn from years of Zora’s elbow resting as he drove—was intentionally left untouched.

“This car represents Corvette history in its purest form,” said Robert Maxhimer, Director of Curatorial Affairs and Education at the National Corvette Museum. “Preserving Zora’s personal Corvette is the first of many in-depth preservation projects that will ensure our collection lasts for generations.”

Zora Arkus-Duntov, inducted into the Corvette Hall of Fame in 1998, played a pivotal role in elevating the Corvette into a world-class performance vehicle. His personal 1974 Corvette Stingray features a 454 big block engine, automatic transmission, air conditioning, power steering and brakes, and aluminum wheels.

Originally silver, then later painted green, the car eventually received its iconic custom two-tone blue livery when Zora asked a friend for a new paint job. The final result, including his initials “ZAD” on the doors, was a surprise—but one Zora appreciated. His wife, Elfi, marked the occasion with a painting of Zora standing beside the car. A decal reading “Zora Arkus-Duntov Engineering Center” remains on the rear deck, serving as a subtle tribute to his legacy.

The preservation will be the centerpiece of a reimagined Corvette Hall of Fame exhibition, launching during the Anniversary weekend. Attendees will enjoy exclusive insights into the restoration process through expert-led sessions featuring the Museum’s new generation of preservation professionals.

The National Corvette Museum’s 31st Anniversary Celebration takes place August 28–30, 2025, in Bowling Green, Kentucky. For tickets, lodging, and a full schedule of events, click the button below.

The National Corvette Museum is proud to share the stories behind the Corvettes on display in our nostalgic 1970s Chevrolet dealership exhibit. While some cars in our collection were once owned by celebrities or are rare special editions, many represent something just as meaningful: the passion of everyday enthusiasts who lived and loved the Corvette lifestyle.

Among them is a white 1975 Corvette Stingray, donated by Edmund De Lussey and his son Liam in memory of Edmund’s father. Known for its sleek profile and strong C3-era styling, this Corvette was so well-preserved it earned an NCRS Top Flight Award®. Liam, who frequently rode shotgun with his grandfather, suggested donating the car—knowing it was meant to be treasured, not sold.

Next to the Stingray is a 1977 Corvette in blue, donated by Elizabeth “Libby” Smith. Libby received the car from her parents as a reward for academic success in college. Because she worked hard to earn it, she kept it in near-perfect condition, leading to another Top Flight Award®. Museum staff were especially impressed by its pristine interior.

Completing the trio is a red 1979 Corvette, donated by Claudia J. Stodghill. With under 5,000 miles and its original tires intact, this car offers a rare glimpse into a nearly untouched C3 Corvette. The 1979 model year was historic: Corvette set an all-time sales record with 53,807 units sold, marking a high point in Corvette’s popularity.

At the National Corvette Museum, we are honored to preserve these vehicles as a tribute to the owners who kept their Corvettes in extraordinary condition and chose to share them with future generations. They are part of the living legacy of America’s Sports Car.

Some of the artifacts in the National Corvette Museum’s collection are actually small collections themselves. One notable example is a set of medallions celebrating the Corvette’s 40th anniversary, which was donated to the Museum by George Biederman. Produced by Pacific Mint in 1993, the set includes a total of 60 medallions, each one showing an image of a Corvette and the crossed flags emblem that corresponds to the Corvette’s generation. The medallions are 1.25 inches tall, two inches wide, and .125 inches thick. They are made of sterling silver, although a coating of translucent enamel covers the top of each one. This coating gives the medallions the appearance of large, brightly colored postage stamps.

Collectors could order the medallions by mail on a month-to-month basis. The set is divided into three cases, each holding 20 medallions. To get the total number to 60, Pacific Mint released two medallions for several Corvette model years, often to represent the coupe and convertible body styles in the set. Other medallions feature special edition or landmark Corvettes like the 25th Anniversary Edition from 1978 and the 1990 ZR-1. The final medallion in the set depicts the 40th Anniversary Corvette, released in 1993.

The National Corvette Museum’s automobile collection includes several of the cars featured in the Pacific Mint set, including a 25th Anniversary Edition Corvette donated by Craig and Sharon Conde. This car’s most distinguishing attribute is its two-toned silver paint, which consists of bright silver on the upper surface and dark silver on the lower surface, separated by silver pinstriping. Although the car also came with aluminum wheels and sport mirrors, the silver paint was what ultimately set this Corvette apart from others in 1978. A total of 15,283 25th Anniversary Corvettes were sold, and their production began the custom of General Motors periodically releasing special Corvettes for the car’s milestone anniversaries. As the Corvette turns 72 this month, enthusiasts have no shortage of collectibles celebrating the evolution of America’s Sports Car.

The collection, carefully cataloged and stewarded by Museum Archivist Madison Modeszto, centers around Ed O’Keefe’s 38-year career at General Motors. As a product improvement engineer, Ed played a pivotal role in the evolution of vehicles coming out of the Bowling Green Assembly Plant, and his work with the Corvette Action Center further expanded his influence on Corvette culture.
